Confessions: Reviewing Middle books

Confession~ I'm awful at reviewing 'middle books'!
This is a problem I've only really noticed this year as I read a lot of new series last year which means I've had a lot of sequels to read this year!
For example I read and loved The Elite by Kiera Cass and Through the Ever Night by Veronica Rossi months ago but I haven't been able to review them yer!
I've tried to figure out why I find it so hard and hopefully you can help me get better!

What type of books are 'middle books'
These 'middle books' tend to be the second book released in any series but particular in trilogies. The second book regardless of the length of the series is usually full of twists, surprises and revelations to keep people interested in the series
I find 'middle books' are more prevalent in Dystopia or Fantasy books as contemporary books tend to either have companion books or much less complex plots.

Why do I find it hard to review these books?
  • I always try to keep my reviews spoiler free but this is much harder with middle books. I don't want to spoil the first book just incase and middle books tend to be drama heavy so it's hard to talk about the book without spoiling anything!
  • I also find it hard to review if big plot points like a character death or a revelation has impacted my perception of the book. For example I love Harry Potter but the death in Half-Blood Prince and the ending made me dislike the book until I read Deathly Hallows and saw the death in a wider context. If I'd reviewed Half-Blood Prince prior to reading Deathly Hallows it would have got a much more negative frustrated review than it deserved.
  • Some middle books exist solely to build the tension and plot for the conclusion of the story. This usually results in less dramatic climaxes and produces more questions than answers. Obviously this is frustrating and normally leaves you slightly annoyed at having to wait for a conclusion.
What do you think?
Are middle books hard to review or am I alone in my struggle?

Much Love!

Blog Tour: Left by T.R Graves

Your own two feet are all you have when you've been left.
A naive Baylee loves Colt, her boyfriend of four years, more than she ever thought possible. After a little snooping, she's convinced she's well on her way toward hearing an once-in-a-lifetime proposal and starring in the wedding-of-the-year event. Instead, she's blindsided by a very public breakup and the crushing news that Colt is marrying someone else… someone more befitting him and the role his father expects him to take in his law firm.
Baylee may have spent years resenting Ariana, her mother, and her suicide, an intolerable show of weakness in Baylee's opinion, but after Colt leaves her just short of the altar, Baylee sees the world through her mother's eyes. She sympathizes with Ariana's actions and realizes that some things—soul-deep aches—can irreparably damage you and make moving on nearly impossible.
At least that's how she feels until she meets Ryker. With his help, Baylee discovers there is life after Colt, and she prepares to move on by pulling herself up by the bootstraps, holding her head high, and standing on her own two feet. Unfortunately, a new jealous and hateful Colt has his own plans for her, and they are plans no one—especially Baylee—ever saw coming.

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas.

After serving out a year of hard labour in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin. Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king's council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she'll serve the kingdom for three years and then be granted her freedom.
Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilarating. But she's bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her... but it's the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.
Then one of the other contestants turns up dead... quickly followed by another.
Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.

Why?
Many years ago I saw this story on FictionPress but never got around to reading it! I was so excited to see it published and to get a second chance to read it!

What I loved:
Celaena- I really like Celaena, she is such a strong female lead! I love her personality and her wit. It was so interesting to see her recovering from her imprisonment while training for the champion competition, I found it very realistic to read. Especially her training sessions and covering up her real talents. Celaena also came across a lot more compassionate than she even seemed to realised from the way she treated servants and the other contestants to the way she was with animals. I did at times find her a bit distant as a narrator and I found it hard to work out what she really felt with regards to certain things! Celaena is definitely one of the most layered and interesting characters I've read in a while and I have a feeling she'll be intriguing me for awhile yet!
Side Cast- Chaol was another interesting character, he was bar far the most rigid rule follower and how seriously he took Celaena as a danger to. I liked how he grew to like and respect Celaena despite himself, especially their morning training routines. Dorian was a lot of fun to read! I loved how confident he was and how he teased Celaena. It was interesting to see how he interacted and responded to his Dad's extreme politics. I'm looking forward to see how Dorian develops as a character and as a prince! Nehemia added a very different dimension to the book. She served as a reminder of the world outside of the palace and how ruthless the King could be. I loved how she embraced Celaena and their friendship was one of my favourite things about Throne of Glass. Philippa was a great witty addition to the cast, she treated Celaena like anyone else and even teased her! I loved Fleetfoot, she sounds adorable! I also liked lots of the minor characters such as the other competitors etc. who I hope crop up again in the series!
Plot- Throne of Glass had such a clever blended plot. I loved the world building especially the history of Erilea and the magical aspects. The champion competition, which I had my doubts about, was well written and masked a bigger plotline. I liked how the plot is clearly part of a series long plot, I found myself asking questions and making lots of guesses which I think makes for a great first book!

What I didn't love as much:
Cain- I found Cain very creepy! I think his size and skill just made the whole character arc a lot more scary!
King- Another horrid character! Apart from being very intimidating and scary, he is also so ruthless! I don't think he'd blink twice at killing his own family if he thought he'd gain land! I'm intrigued by what his end game is going to be.

Rating!
Absolutley adored the plot, the side characters and Celaena! I can't wait for more!

Check out my predictions for Crown of Midnight!
Did you love Throne of Glass?
Much Love!

Behind the Blog: New Rating!

I created my rating system almost a year ago and I definitely feel like it has improved my reviews and made it a lot easy to differentiate between them.
However I do think it's time for a little update and refresh!

In!

4½ Hearts
~ I love it! It's almost perfect and I keep rereading it over and over!
It's lead me to read similar books or more of the same author.

I often feel like books I've read are more than 4 Hearts but not quite 5 so in comes 4½ hearts!
I definitely feel like 4½ hearts is needed as I always find myself struggling with my ratings, I imagine 4½ will be like an A and 5 like an A*!

Out!

2½ Hearts
I liked aspects of it but something really put me off...
I rarely use 2 or 2½ as a rating so it makes sense to combine 2 and 2½ into one rating!

I'm looking forward to implementing this new rating!
I'm going to do a mini series of posts on ratings and reviewing etc. just to make my new rating system more open and concise.

Let me know what you think!
Much Love!

Blog Tour: Unspoken by Jen Frederick.

Whore. Slut. Typhoid Mary.
I've been called all these at Central College. One drunken night, one act of irresponsible behaviour, and my reputation was ruined. Guys labelled me as easy and girls shied away. To cope, I stayed away from Central social life and away from Central men, so why is it that my new biology lab partner is so irresistible to me?
He's everything I shouldn't want. A former Marine involved in illegal fighting with a quick trigger temper and an easy smile for all the women. His fists aren't the danger to me, though, it's his charm. He's sliding his way into my heart and I'm afraid that he's going to be the one to break me.
Impulsive. Unthinking. Hot tempered.
I allow instinct to rule my behaviour. If it feels good, do it, has been my motto because if I spend too much time thinking, I'll begin to remember exactly where I came from. At Central College, I've got fighting and I've got women and I thought I was satisfied until I met her.
She's everything I didn't realize I wanted and the more time I spend with her, the more I want her. But she's been hurt too much in the past and I don't want to be the one to break her. I know I should walk away, but I just can't.

Why?
I loved Undeclared and I especially liked Bo and AM so I've been looking forward to Unspoken for ages!

What I loved:
AM- AM was different from Undeclared, a lot more vulnerable! I think she'd handled her difficult life and background as best she could. I admired how she tried to hold her head high and worked hard at her classes. I loved how she slowly realised she needed to react differently to the harsh rumours. Bo and her made perfect sense- I really liked them together, and reading them getting closer. I found AM's family background interesting, it was clear how her mother's pathetic attachment to a married man had shaped AM's personality and actions. I would have loved more on her father and his other family.
Bo- I loved Bo in Undeclared and I loved him even more in Unspoken. He is the perfect blend of sarcasm, wit, confidence and hidden depth! I liked how he pursued AM and really paid attention to the little details about her. I especially liked how he tried to persuade AM to stand up for herself even if he could have been more tactful! Bo also had a very interesting background, it was good to see how it had affected him as a person and how his family had changed since. I just love Bo as a character!
Side Cast- The Woodlands cast is full of amazingly complex side characters! Finn remains my favourite Woodland boy- I'm even more into him after learning more about this family background and how he got into real estate! I can't wait for his book! Noah and Grace's appearances were really interesting, I liked seeing them from Bo and AM's point of views. Noah and Bo's dedication to each other remained strong despite differing opinions. Lana made a surprisingly big appearance and once again made me want to read more about her! I initially thought Lana would be the lead girl in Bo's story now I'm thinking she'll be the lead in Finn's story. AM's friends brought a new dimension to the cast as they were very outgoing and unique. I especially loved Ellie and her fierce loyalty to AM and her relationship with Ryan.

What I didn't love as much:
More- I would of loved to see AM go home and see her interact with her Mum and Roger. I also wanted even more of Ellie and Ryan!

Rating!
I absolutely loved Bo and AM and the entire side cast!

I can't wait for the next Woodlands book!
Much Love!

Cover Reveal: Drift by Steph Campbell and Liz Reinhardt.

There’s no way Lydia--oldest and most responsible of the tight-knit Rodriguez clan--is going to let her nosy family find out about the uncharacteristic work screw-up that landed her a paid suspension. To keep busy and avoid panic, she enrols in a life enrichment class. The first guest speaker is a handsome artist with a wicked smile and eyes that melt right through her.
Even the “ice princess” can’t help but feel an immediate spark that lights her blood on fire.
Isaac Ortiz is unquestionably the sexiest man Lydia has ever met. The talented son of a famous Spanish artist, he’s constantly moving from one new glamorous city to another, working if and when the muse visits him.
He also has a stare that makes Lydia’s heart race and hands that look more than capable of making her scream with pleasure. She shouldn’t be attracted to this free-spirit who makes all his own rules--but she is.
There’s just one hiccup....Isaac is nineteen.
Lydia has lived her entire life firmly inside the box, and being with a younger man is definitely outside the safe confines she enjoys.
So why can’t she stay away from him? And why is she seriously considering his proposition to take off to a place she’s never been...just because?
When Lydia is invited back to work with a cleared name, she should be overjoyed.
But the reality is, Lydia doesn’t know what anchors her life anymore...or if she wants to be anchored at all. Should she travel the world with Isaac? Or continue down the road that she’s worked long and hard to pave for herself? Choosing one means losing the other, and Lydia isn’t sure if she’s ready to drift with the current that’s pulling her by the heart.

So excited for the next Lengths book! I find Lydia to be one of the most interesting side characters so I'm looking forward to her story!

Much Love!

So when offered a chance to explore the world past the limits she’s known, Tris is ready. Perhaps beyond the fence, she and Tobias will find a simple new life together, free from complicated lies, tangled loyalties, and painful memories.
But Tris’s new reality is even more alarming than the one she left behind. Old discoveries are quickly rendered meaningless. Explosive new truths change the hearts of those she loves. And once again, Tris must battle to comprehend the complexities of human nature—and of herself—while facing impossible choices about courage, allegiance, sacrifice, and love.

Status: Published 22nd October.
I loved Divergent and I'm so excited to find out how it all ends! I've been holding off reading Insurgent so I can read them both together!

The girl with straight As, designer clothes and the perfect life-that's who people expect Rachel Young to be. So the private-school junior keeps secrets from her wealthy parents and overbearing brothers...and she's just added two more to the list. One involves racing strangers down dark country roads in her Mustang GT. The other? Seventeen-year-old Isaiah Walker-a guy she has no business even talking to. But when the foster kid with the tattoos and intense grey eyes comes to her rescue, she can't get him out of her mind.
Isaiah has secrets, too. About where he lives, and how he really feels about Rachel. The last thing he needs is to get tangled up with a rich girl who wants to slum it on the south side for kicks-no matter how angelic she might look.
But when their shared love of street racing puts both their lives in jeopardy, they have six weeks to come up with a way out. Six weeks to discover just how far they'll go to save each other.

Status: Published Late November/Early December- Can't work out which is the UK date!
Looking forward to Isaiah's story! I've been waiting for it since Pushing the Limits!

Companions!
Centuries after wars nearly destroyed civilization, the two islands of New Pacifica stand alone, a terraformed paradise where even the Reduction—the devastating brain disorder that sparked the wars—is a distant memory. Yet on the isle of Galatea, an uprising against the ruling aristocrats has turned deadly. The revolutionaries’ weapon is a drug that damages their enemies’ brains, and the only hope is rescue by a mysterious spy known as the Wild Poppy.
On the neighboring island of Albion, no one suspects that the Wild Poppy is actually famously frivolous aristocrat Persis Blake. The teenager uses her shallow, socialite trappings to hide her true purpose: her gossipy flutternotes are encrypted plans, her pampered sea mink is genetically engineered for spying, and her well-publicized new romance with handsome Galatean medic Justen Helo… is her most dangerous mission ever.
Though Persis is falling for Justen, she can’t risk showing him her true self, especially once she learns he’s hiding far more than simply his disenchantment with his country’s revolution and his undeniable attraction to the silly socialite he’s pretending to love. His darkest secret could plunge both islands into a new dark age, and Persis realizes that when it comes to Justen Helo, she’s not only risking her heart, she’s risking the world she’s sworn to protect.
 Status: Published 15th October!
Since reading Among the Nameless Stars I've been in love with the world Diana has created!

There’s tortured. And there’s Garth Black.
His life has been a constant carousel of tragedy and disappointment, including his love life. Of course, applying the term “love” to Garth’s conquests is a gross misuse of the word. Some people were made to give and accept love, and others weren’t. Garth Black redefines the “others” category. He’s made a vow that the day he meets a woman who could sucker him into falling in love will be the day he runs away.
Garth’s plan has one flaw. What happens when he’s already fallen hard for a girl before the warning signs and red flags go up? What happens when the love he’s avoided his entire life brings him to his knees? What happens when Garth Black lets the dirtiest four letter word he’s ever known into his dark, lonely life?
This cowboy’s about to find out he can control some things, and he can’t control others. Number one on the what he can’t control list?
Love.

Status: Just published!
I love this series and I'm excited to see it from Garth's point of view and learn more about him!

Commitment. That’s what I really want from Colin. Ever since my brother, Danny, died in Iraq, Colin’s done so much to help me, including giving me a job at his popular restaurant so I can leave my crappy waitressing job at the strip joint. But lying in bed with him every night to comfort him from his horrible nightmares isn’t enough anymore. I know he feels guilty about Danny’s death, about not going to Iraq, but I can’t keep living this double life.
I love him desperately, but he’s got so many demons, and if he can’t open up to me now, then he’ll never be the real partner I need him to be. I gave him a month, and now I’m out of here. If he truly loves me like he says, he knows where to find me

Status: Published 10th December.
Another series with a new couple! I'm looking forward to reading Jen and Colin's story!

Sequels!
After spending an amazing day and night together in Paris, Just One Year is Willem’s story, picking up where Just One Day ended. His story of their year of quiet longing and near misses is a perfect counterpoint to Allyson’s own as Willem undergoes a transformative journey, questioning his path, finding love, and ultimately, redefining himself.

Did I achieve my goals?
I didn't post a July review post so no goals! I'm going back and posting it now :)

What I hope to achieve in September!
  • Diversity- I want to keep this one up and improve on it. Especially the companion post idea and new post ideas!
  • Reviews- I posted a good amount of reviews in August so I'm aiming for at least eight in September!
How was your August?
Much Love!
